Lose Fat by Listening to Grandma? Part 2 Dentures Optional
Introduction:
Changing a few simple habits (imparted to me from my grandmother) made a huge impact on my bodyfat levels and didn't require any dieting. To get the full introduction to this series click here.
Here's The Second Thing That I Did:
I started chewing my food! Sounds really boring doesn't it? Well... it is! Not everything you'll do to lose fat is exciting. You can convince yourself that this doesn't make a huge difference in your quest to burn fat but it does.
When you chew thoroughly:
- You expose your food to more digestive enzymes in your saliva such as amylase and lipase
- You break up your food causing a greater amount of surface area to be exposed to your stomach acid
- You ensure that the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals will have a much better chance of being assimilated properly
So if that isn't convincing enough, lets look at a few things that happen when you don't chew your food:
- Less vitamins, minerals, and nutrients are assimilated. You can't burn fat if you're missing the things that make that happen!
- With all that undigested food making it into your intestines guess what happens to it? It ferments. If you've ever brewed beer you know what fermentation does. It produces Gas! I bet people love to be around you when you don't digest your food properly.
- Your digestive system will not operate properly leading to...
- Your immune system doesn't work properly (because a massive portion of your immune system is housed in your digestive tract); which leads to...
- You add stress on your body which always ends up raising cortisol levels; leading to...
- Reduced levels of sex hormones (like testosterone and estrogen) and elevated blood sugar which leads to...
- You staying fat!
Make sure your food is in liquid form before you swallow it and make sure that any protein shakes and smoothies are also "chewed" or you'll end up with the same problems listed above. Photo: Jenny Downing
